Parenzana Project - cycling route

Parenzana is a former narrow-gauge railway that connected Poreč and Trieste between 1902 and 1935, passing through the picturesque landscape of rural Istria, and today it is a cycling route. Over the last ten years, the Parenzana route has been cleared as well as improved and enriched in terms of infrastructure and content.
In order to meet the needs of today's cyclists, continuous additional investments are required. The County of Istria i.e. the Department of Tourism is in charge of looking after and promoting the route.

In the last several months (the works began in May 2017), numerous activities have been carried out, contributing to the improvement of the route, and are co-financed by the Tourism Fund. A table with benches, a bicycle rack and a garbage bin (all made from recycled plastic), a board with the map of Parenzana, a service station with a pump and a repair kit have all been put up in Buje.
The Municipality of Grožnjan got a board with the map, a service station, an innovative reclining chair that serves as a bike rack and a solar-powered bike counter. The rest area in Oprtalj got a board with the map, a reclining chair, a service station and a bike counter, while Poreč got a board with the map and a service station.
In addition to the above, the route is regularly maintained (mowing, filling, repairs, etc.) in cooperation with the towns and municipalities through which it passes.

The Department of Tourism continually follows funding proposals and tenders of the Ministry of Tourism and the EU funds through which it will continue to develop and enrich Parenzana.

We would like to invite you to experience for yourself the ride along the newly developed route!
