About the Project
The main objectives of PARENZANA I Project were to revitalise the former railway line, integrate tourism resources and establish long-term cross-border cooperation. The objectives were attained through the arrangement of about 60 kilometres of the old railway alignment, which until then had not been in use, in the areas of the municipalities of Vižinada, Karojba, Motovun, Oprtalj and Grožnjan, and in the areas of the towns of Buje and Umag. The route was converted into a bicycle path and hiking trail. During the same time, the Slovenian partner restored about 20 kilometres of the route in the territory of the Republic of Slovenia.
The specific objectives of the projects were to preserve the alignment of the old Parenzana railway line and to establish a new bicycle path with a view to ensure the development of tourism, to integrate the cultural heritage and tourist events into a unique tourism product, to promote and market the integrated tourism product through organization and promotion of cultural events in the Istrian region, to raise the public awareness of the significance of Parenzana, to disburden road traffic and introduce sustainable mobility, to improve knowledge and quality in tourism and other service activities.
