Goals

In 2009, the continuation of the project was proposed and approved within the framework of the IPA CBC Operational Programme SI-HR 2007-2013, designated as PARENZANA II – Revitalisation of the Route of Health and Friendship.

Within the PARENZANA II Project, two railway route sections have been restored, namely the sections from Vižinada to Poreč and from Lama to Dekani; a bridge rebuilt at Livade and a full-size locomotive model made and exhibited at Vižinada. Copies of milestones are being produced and positioned, multilingual information, signalling and thematic boards placed and rest areas arranged along the bicycle path. Four bike rangers have been trained, and bike information points and information kiosks, offering information and services, have been established. Moreover, the Parenzana multimeda museum, located right next to the route at Livade, has been restructured and enlarged.

The specific objectives of the project include preservation of the old railway route in Slovenia and Croatia, and the construction of additional cycling infrastructure for recreation and sporting purposes, enabling the development of tourist infrastructure and the integration of natural, cultural and technical heritage and tourist events into an integrated tourism product, which will enhance the visibility of the area and the route; improvement of the presentation and promotion of all participating municipalities and the entire Istria as an integrated product, dedicated to nature and cycling fans, through the organization and promotion of cultural events; raising of public awareness of the significance and development potential of Parenzana, which will contribute to better visibility of the area and enable networking in support of cross-border cooperation, disburdening of road traffic and introduction of environment-friendly transport modes, such as walking and cycling, the purpose of which is to encourage the local population and tourists to use alternative mobility modes.
