NOVA VAS

NOVA VAS

On its way to Poreč, Parenzana passed the village of Nova vas, the birthplace of a beautiful shepherdess Milka. According to the legend, a nobleman from Poreč, Gabriel, fell in love with her in the distant 13th century. Gabriel’s mother could not accept her son’s love and she hired some ruffians to kill the girl. The ruffians threw the poor shepherdess into a pit, where her petrified body, resting in the eternal twilight, is still waiting to be found by her lover...

Another attraction located at Nova vas is a geomorphological natural monument of the Baredine Cave. The cave has five halls, decorated with luxurious cave ornaments: stalactites, stalagmites, hanging curtains and underground lakes. There live the proteus, also called the “human fish”, an endemic species of the Dinaric karst, and transparent crabs and insects. At the entrance of the cave, fragments of prehistoric ceramics were found. It is assumed that our ancestors were leaving ceramic pots there to collect precious water dripping from the ceiling of the cave. The former Parenzana station is located near the cave. The station had a porch with benches for passengers and a short loading track. It took 19 minutes for the little train to get to Poreč, driving through a densely populated karst landscape.
